Fronted by guitarist/composer Mason Razavi, The Mason Razavi Nonet is a modern jazz ensemble that draws on influences ranging from Ellington to Maria Schneider to The Pat Metheny Group, Kurt Rosenwinkel, and beyond. The nonet recorded half of the selections on Razavi's Quartet Plus album in 2014. The album spent 5 weeks on the American Top 40 Jazz chart CMJ (peaking at #17) and 7 weeks on the RMR Top 50 Jazz Chart (peaking at #5). The ensemble has performed at the 2015 San Jose Jazz Summer Festival as well as other Bay Area venues. Razavi's music for the ensemble has been described as "halfway between Gil Evans and Either/Orchestra" (Mark Tucker, FAME), while also being praised for "Evocative storytelling" (Tyran Grillo, All About Jazz). H. Allen Williams of Jazz Times calls Razavi "a thoughtful player and composer that offers the listener an introspective experience of deeper meaning", adding that his music is a "mature rendering of masterful playing and ideas".
